La Japonaise a la Noelle

TABLEAUX VIVANT
ILLUSTRATION
Brief
Create a tableau vivant (living picture) influenced by an historical era.
Description
Visually depict a historical period and place a human element within a constructed background, using symbols or designed objects from the era to establish context.
I aimed to create layers of meaning by using Ukiyo-e-style illustrations typical of Meiji Japan and transposing these on folding fans, an artefact of that time. I then recreated Monet's famous Japonisme-era 'La Japonaise' using the illustrated fans.

UKIYO-E STYLE ILLUSTRATIONS
For this project I recreated typical ukiyo-e illustrations from Meiji-era Japan, using poses and props common to the time.
FANS
Using the 'ukiyo-e' illustrations, I transposed these images on to hand-held fans, typical of Meiji-era Japan.
JAPONISME
Finally, the illustrated fans formed the backdrop of my homage to Monet's famous 'La Japonaise' painting, whereby his wife, Camille, is surrounded by falling fans.
